Kitchens and bathrooms are big-ticket jobs with lots of moving parts: several trades, products the customer may be supplying, and a sequence that has to run in the right order. A quote that sets all of that out gives the customer confidence and protects you when they ask "I thought that was included".
What should a kitchen or bathroom quote include?
- Strip-out and disposal of the old kitchen or bathroom.
- Every trade involved, such as plumbing, electrics, gas, plastering, tiling and decorating, and whether you're doing it or subcontracting.
- Supply: which units, worktops, appliances, sanitaryware and tiles you're supplying, and which the customer is.
- Fitting, including worktop templating and cutting, and appliance installation.
- Making good and finishing, such as tiling, flooring, silicone and painting.
- A payment schedule with a deposit, lead times for products, and how long the job will take.
How do fitters price work?
Fit-only jobs are often priced per unit or per job. Full refits are priced per job, built up from each trade's labour, materials and products, usually with a deposit on acceptance and stage payments as the job goes on. Because product lead times vary, many fitters ask for a deposit so they can order.
Which regulations should a kitchen or bathroom quote mention?
- Bathroom electrics and new kitchen circuits can be notifiable under Part P in England and Wales, so they must be done by a registered electrician or notified to building control.
- Connecting or moving a gas hob or cooker must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- Moving drainage or adding a bathroom may need Building Regulations approval.
- Show your own registrations, and those of your subcontractors, on the quote where they apply.
